The study of the Earth's surface features and landforms is referred to as physiography. India can be classified into four physiographic divisions based on its tectonic history, stratigraphy, and physiography:

1. The elevated Peninsular Region;
2. The mighty Himalayas and their associated young folded mountains;
3. The Indo-Gangetic-Brahmaputra Plains; and
4. The Coastal Plains and Islands
