SWARAN SINGH COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS

The Sardar Swaran Singh Committee was established by the Congress Party in 1976 to offer suggestions on Fundamental Duties. The committee suggested that the Constitution have a distinct chapter on Fundamental Duties. It emphasised that citizens should be aware that, in addition to exercising their rights, they also have responsibilities to fulfil. The 42nd Amendment Act was enacted in 1976 by the Congress government at the centre, which approved these recommendations. Despite the Swaran Singh Committee's recommendation that the Constitution have eight Fundamental Duties, the 42nd Amendment Act of 1976 includes ten Fundamental Duties.
