UNION TERRITORY

In response to tribal requests, many new states have been created in the country's north-eastern region. The north-eastern region of Assam was divided in 1957 and named as the North-East Frontier Agency (N.E.F.A). The Naga Hills Tuensang Area was a centrally controlled area in the Naga Hills territory. In 1961, it was renamed Nagaland, and on December 1, 1963, it received statehood. Under the States Reorganization Act of 1956, Manipur became a Union Territory, and in 1972, it was elevated to the status of a full-fledged state of the Union. On April 2, 1970, Meghalaya was established as an autonomous state within Assam. In response to tribal requests, many new states have been created in the country's north-eastern region. On April 2, 1970, Meghalaya was established as an autonomous state within Assam. Meghalaya was established as a full-fledged state on January 21, 1972. In 1956, Tripura was designated as a centrally governed region. In 1972, it was awarded statehood. In 1972, three states in the north-eastern part of the country were formed. After that, Sikkim was no longer an Indian protectorate. As a result of a referendum held on April 14, 1975, it became an essential part of India. On February 20, 1987, the North-East Frontier Agency was renamed Arunachal Pradesh and awarded full sovereignty. Mizoram was a district of Assam until 1972, when it became a union territory after the North-Eastern Reorganisation Act was implemented. On February 20, 1987, it was awarded full statehood.

Returning to the south, it's worth noting that the Mysore State, established in 1956, was renamed Karnataka in 1973 in response to the majority of the population speaking Kannada. Goa, which gained independence in 1961, was granted statehood on May 30, 1987, however Daman and Dir remain union territories.

On November 1, 1966, the bilingual state of Punjab in the north western region of the country was partitioned into Punjabi-speaking Punjab and Hindi-speaking Haryana. On this date, the new state of Haryana was established. Himachal Pradesh was given certain hilly parts of what was once Punjab. On January 25, 1971, it was awarded full statehood.

In November of 2000, three new states were created. On November 1, 2000, Chhattisgarh was formed out of Madhya Pradesh as the 26th state of the union, fulfilling a long-standing desire of the tribal people. On November 9, 2000, the hilly portions of Uttar Pradesh were divided to form the new state of Uttarakhand. This is India's 27th state, sharing international borders with China (Tibet) to the north and Nepal to the east. On November 15, 2000, Jharkhand, India's 28th state, was formed out of Bihar. This tribal state is mostly made up of Chotanagpur plateau and Santhal Pargana forest regions, and it has distinct cultural traditions. 

On June 2, 2014, the 29th state of Telengana was formed out of Andhra Pradesh, fulfilling a long-standing demand of people in the Telengana part of the state. So far, this is the Indian Union's newest state.

Rajasthan is the largest state in the Indian Union, with a total area of 3,42,239 square kilometres. In fact, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra each have an area of more than three lakh sq km, accounting for approximately a third of the country's overall area. Goa, on the other hand, is the smallest state, with only 3,702 square kilometres. The majority of the north-eastern states are minor, with the exception of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. From an administrative viewpoint, Uttar Pradesh has the most districts (71), while Goa has only two. Hindi is the official language of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, and the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
