Introduction to TET (CTET, STET)image

Introduction:-

One of the most common Government Job exam in India is the T.E.T. exam. So basically, it is a competitive exam for the candidates who are willing to become a teacher in the future. It is a minimum qualification required by any candidate to become a government teacher. It takes place every year and the candidates have to go through the tests to decide whether they are eligible for the job (both in government as well as private schools).

Teacher Eligibility Test (T.E.T.) is conducted at both the National level & State levels, i.e., it is conducted at both the State Government levels well as Central Government level.

What is the T.E.T. Exam ?

T.E.T. stands for Teacher Eligibility Test. T.E.T. Exam is of two types i.e., S.T.E.T. & C.T.E.T., where S.T.E.T. stands for State Teacher Eligibility Test which is conducted by the State Government in different States across India; whereas C.T.E.T. stands for Central Teacher Eligibility Test which is conducted by the Central Government (i.e., C.B.S.E.).

Teacher Eligibility Test (T.E.T.) is the minimum qualification required for a candidate to be eligible for a teacher in any of the schools. Candidates who are interested to work in Government Schools as a teacher, it is very important for him/her to clear the T.E.T. Exam. If the teacher’s post is vacant in a government school, then the candidates can easily apply for the job after he/she clears the exam. Sometimes, after clearing such Exams, Government verifies the candidates' documents and whenever there are some vacancies, Govt. sends the offer letter. That’s why the candidates must give the T.E.T. exam if he/she wants to become Government teacher.

The T.E.T. exam has no specific numbers i.e., how many times this exam will be held in a year is not certain or fixed. It’s according to the availability of the vacancy. For example, in a year where the vacancy slot is high, this exam may be held twice a year. Whereas sometimes the exam may be conducted only once in two years which is rare. The State T.E.T. Exam is being conducted State-wise. For example, U.P.T.E.T. which happens in Uttar Pradesh, then comes Bihar T.E.T., Rajasthan T.E.T., Uttarakhand T.E.T., Tripura T.E.T., etc.

Eligibility Criteria of the T.E.T. Exam

In order to appear for the T.E.T. Exam, candidates should fulfill the minimum required eligibility criteria.

The Basic Eligibility Criteria for Primary teachers are:

First of all we should know about the educational qualification, what are the qualifications we should have to become a Primary Teacher i.e., from classes 1 to 5. Here, the qualification is given,

  • You need to pass the Senior Secondary Exam or any other equivalent exam with a minimum 45% of marks i.e., 12th passed is compulsory. Apart from that, you should also have a 2 years Diploma in Elementary Education. If you have done a Diploma then you are eligible for Primary Teacher Exam and if you are in the final year of the Diploma then you are still eligible for Primary Teacher Exam.
  • And if you do not have this qualification, then the second qualification option is also given. That is, you should have 12th certificate and you should also have 4 years Bachelor of Elementary Education Degree. If you have done Bachelor of Elementary Education then you are eligible for Primary Teacher Exam and if you are in your final year, then also you are eligible.
  • If you don’t have any of these above qualifications, then you have the third option. You must have a graduation degree. Along with this, it is also necessary to have 2 years Diploma in Elementary Education. If you are in the final year of your Diploma and also have a graduation degree then you can apply too.

So, this is the qualification required for a Primary Teacher. You should have the combination of any one point out of the 3 points. Generally, Primary Teacher’s Exam is of two and a half hours (i.e., 2 hours 30 mins).

# The Basic Eligibility Criteria of Junior teachers are:

After this let us move ahead and know the eligibility criteria for Junior Teacher (become a teacher from classes 6 to 8). This exam is also for two and a half hours (i.e., 2 hours 30 minutes).

  • For this, you should have a graduation degree and a 2 years Diploma in Elementary Education.
  • And if it does not match, then here is another option given. You must have a graduation degree with minimum 45% marks along with B.Ed. (even if you are in the first year).
  • Third option: If you are in the final year of B.El.Ed and you have also done 12th with a minimum 45% of marks, then you can still apply for Junior Teacher Exam.
  • After this, there is another qualification criterion. If you have done any of these integrated courses like BA, B.Sc, B.Ed, or any other equivalent courses, or if you are in the final year of any of these integrated courses, then you can apply for the Junior Teacher Exam.

Age Limit

So, let’s move ahead and know about the age limit. Here, I am going to tell you the age limit for both the exams (i.e., 1st Paper & 2nd Paper).

  • If you belong to the Unreserved Category (i.e., for the General Category), then your age should be between 18 to 35 years (i.e., minimum 18 & maximum 35 years).
  • For the OBC category, it is from 18 to 38 years.
  • For S.T. /S.C., the age limit is from 18 to 40 years.
  • For the PH Candidates (i.e., who are Physically Handicapped), the age limit is from 18 to 45 years.

T.E.T. Exam Pattern

The T.E.T. Syllabus is usually divided into two parts (i.e., 1st Paper & 2nd Paper). TET-I is for Primary Teachers and TET-II is for Junior Teachers.

So now let’s move on and know about the exam pattern of TET. First of all, we will discuss the exam pattern of 1st Paper and after that, we will discuss the exam pattern of the 2nd Paper.

T.E.T. Paper 1 Syllabus: Generally, the syllabus for T..E.T. Paper 1 includes topics from Child Development and Pedagogy, Language-I, Language-II, Mathematics, and Environmental Studies.

So let’s see what is it’s exam pattern, so here the subjects are given, followed by the questions and then the marks are given. So you can see how many subjects you have in 1st Paper, there are 5 subjects given here,

  • The first subject is your CDP (i.e., Child Development & Pedagogy), in which total 30 number of questions will be asked from 30 marks (i.e., for each question it will be of 1 mark).
  • After this, there is 2nd paper & 3rd paper which is a language paper and both the paper has 30-30 number of questions for 30+30 marks.
  • The 4th subject is of Environmental Studies, this is also of 30 marks and from this also 30 questions are asked.
  • And the last subject of yours is Mathematics, here also 30 questions come of 30 marks.

So the total is of 150 questions and total marks are also 150.

TET Paper 2 Syllabus: The TET syllabus for Paper 2 includes topics from Child Development and Pedagogy, Language-I, Language-II, Mathematics and Science or Social Studies/Social Sciences.

So, the pattern of 2nd paper is also somewhat similar to 1st paper. But, there is a slight difference in it. In this also the subjects are almost the same. Followed by 1st language and 2nd language, there is little change made in terms of Social Science or Mathematics & Science.

  • Talking about the M.C.Q. questions, then there are 30 questions of C.D.P. (i.e., Child Development & Pedagogy) for 30 marks.
  • In the case of 1st language & 2nd language, both have 30-30 questions of 30+30 marks.
  • 60 questions are there for Social Science or Mathematics & Science for 60 marks.

So, a total of 150 questions are of 150 marks, and this exam is not having any negative markings.

Note that the syllabus of all the States are a bit different, and the certificate you get is valid for 7 years only. So, when you give the T.E.T. exam and you clear it, the certificate you get will help you for 7 years. Whenever there is a vacancy for a Government teacher job anytime in 7 years, you can apply for it. After 7 years, your certificate becomes invalid.

How to prepare for the T.E.T. Exam?

To prepare for the T.E.T. exam, candidates should be familiar with the exam pattern and Syllabus of the T.E.T. exam prescribed officially by the exam conducting body.

The teacher eligibility tests typically consist of two papers (1 and 2). Let us know what differences we have in both papers. 1st Paper is given to those candidates who wanted to become a teacher for classes 1 to 5 and 2nd Paper is given to those candidates who want to become a teachers for classes 6 to 8. If there are such candidates who are willing to become a teacher for classes 1 to 8 then they can give both papers.

GENERAL T.E.T. Passing Marks

Let us know the passing mark. Note that we are talking about general passing marks. It may vary from time to time depending on the board's decision. The passing marks in this are category-wise,

  • General Category - 60% (90): If you belong to General Category then you need to score 60% in the exam. If we talk about 60%, then out of your total 150 marks, you should have at least 90 marks. Then only you will pass the exam.
  • O.B.C./P.H./F.F./S.C./S.T./Dependent/Ex-man - 55% (83): In case of O.B.C./P.H./F.F./S.C./S.T./Dependent/Ex-man, the passing marks for all these categories is 55%, i.e., out of 150 marks you have to score 83 marks. If you score 83 marks, then you will pass the exam.

This is such an exam, which you can attempt unlimited times (as long as you have the age limit to attempt this exam). If a student has given T.E.T. Exam and passed the same; but he/she wants to improve his/her score further, the exam can be attempted again. Apart from this, if there is a candidate who wants to give both papers (i.e., 1st Paper & 2nd Paper), then he/she can give both papers.
