The decision to rename the Ahmednagar district as Ahilya Nagar has been made public by the Maharashtra Cabinet. Ahilyabai Holkar, a Maratha queen from the 18th century, is honored by the renaming.On May 20, 2023, the 298th anniversary of Ahilyabai Holkas birth, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde initially announced the idea to rename Ahmednagar.
